Luggage Locker in Kaunas (and Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia)
• 3 minute read • Problem
I needed 24/7 (at minimum 22:30) luggage storage in Kaunas, near the bus coach station. All the documented options either didn’t exist or were not available.
The other options:
- The rail station. On my initial plan it wasn’t on my way to anywhere (+35min extra time moving). Visit Kaunas documents it being open until 21:45, although in hindsight the train station itself lists it is open until 00:00.
- Kautra (the bus station itself, open until 00:00) storage is supposed to be available until 19:30. I didn’t find the storage location regardless.
- Radical Storage: Advertises 3 shops (only open during the day). In checkout with various fees, it would’ve been 18€ for a suitcase.
¶Package lockers
Other providers, such as Omniva, DPD, SmartPosti, and Venipak also had lockers, but they weren’t as large as LP Express’s XL locker (74,5 x 61 x 35 cm for 2.80 €).
I was traveling with a large suitcase, PHX02-L (listed as 75 x 50 x 30 cm). The actual locker is around 76-77 cm, I could easily wheel in the suitcase. Minor problem is that the XL lockers are the highest up, the suitecase (~17kg) needs to be lifted to shoulder height.
¶a Plan to walk in the city without luggage
First walk the city (with luggage), then walk back. Planning is priceless.
To my surprise, both L and XL lockers were at capacity at K. Donelaičio and Akropolis. The latter having many lockers, but not for me.
Calling support is not possible with a non-Lithuanian number. It is 4-digit short number and can’t be called, even when adding the country prefix +370. No number is listed on their website. Luckily, the Estonian subsidiary (Unisend) does, and I was able to get their number: +370080020000.
After a Lithuanian phone tree (same scheme as the Estonian one) and holding, I was connected to support. I had to confirm that, speaking English, I am indeed actually in Lithuania. They explained that they can only help me with tax issues.
When my friend called and talked in Lithuanian, they did agree to help check ahead in their systems, but required exact addresses of the package lockers (instead of finding a closeby alternative locker). It’s unfortunate that the availability isn’t listed on the website, at least as a yes/no before selecting a specific locker and paying online.
¶The service
The third location, Viada uDrop did have capacity. I do recommend still creating the label online, since uDrop lockers ask twice the price (~5.60 €) on-location, and ask you to punch in phone-email-name entry twice. Paying online also guarantees you have a receipt.
There is a delay in getting the SMS, as such the locker can’t be opened for 30 minutes after locking. Neither can you open and put/take some items out of the locker without paying again.
At least they accept any phone number, unlike postal service in Czechia, where they just refuse service and return the package. I literally have a +420 only for this. Does anybody have a quad-sim phone for me?
